Aperçu économique et sectoriel

Hungary is an upper-middle-income, open economy in Central Europe and a member of the European Union since 2004, though it retains its own currency, the Hungarian Forint. The economy is heavily oriented toward manufacturing and exports, with automobiles, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals representing key industrial pillars. Services account for roughly 57% of GDP, while manufacturing and other industry contribute approximately 38% combined. Hungary has attracted significant foreign direct investment, particularly in electric vehicle battery production from Asian manufacturers. The country faces ongoing fiscal pressures, with a government deficit above 5% of GDP, and its economic trajectory is closely tied to demand from Germany and the broader euro area.

Subventions Long-term residency permit (10-year, renewable) — no direct citizenship pathway

Hungary closed its previous 'residency bond' programme in 2017. A new Guest Investor Programme (Vendégbefektetői Program) was introduced in 2024 under Act LX of 2024, offering residency permits to non-EU nationals who invest a minimum of EUR 250,000 in approved Hungarian real estate investment funds, EUR 500,000 in direct real estate purchase, or donate EUR 1,000,000 to a Hungarian higher education institution. The programme grants a 10-year renewable residency permit. It does not provide a direct path to citizenship, which requires a separate long-term residency and naturalization process.
