Panorama económico e industrial

Taiwan is a high-income economy and a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) holding approximately 70% of the world's advanced foundry market share. The technology sector — encompassing semiconductors, electronics, and IT hardware — accounts for over 80% of TWSE market capitalization, reflecting the economy's deep integration into global technology supply chains. Taiwan posted exceptional real GDP growth of approximately 7.4% in 2025, driven largely by surging demand for AI-related chips and advanced packaging. Financial services, petrochemicals, and telecommunications form the primary non-technology pillars of the domestic economy. Taiwan's total TWSE market capitalization reached approximately NT$94 trillion (roughly USD 2.95 trillion) at end-2025, ranking the exchange among the world's top ten by market value.

Acceso a brókers locales

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) added direct access to both the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) and the Taipei Exchange (TPEx) in 2023, allowing eligible global clients to trade Taiwanese equities, ETFs, and TDRs from a single account. Note that IBKR clients resident in Taiwan itself, mainland China, Japan (IBSJ), or India (IBINDIA) are ineligible for this direct TWSE/TPEx access. Saxo Bank also offers access to Taiwanese equities for non-resident international clients. Local brokerage accounts can be opened at Taiwanese securities firms such as Yuanta Securities, Fubon Securities, and KGI Securities — these require in-person visits or a local representative for foreign nationals, along with TWSE Investor ID registration and a local bank settlement account. Many foreign investors access Taiwan via US-listed ADRs (TSM, UMC, ASX, CHT) or through US-traded ETFs (EWT, FLTW) to avoid the local account-opening process.

Reubicación y residencia

Visado de inversión / programa de residencia

Subvenciones Temporary residency (renewable; path to permanent residency)

Taiwan offers an investment-based residency pathway but does not market it as a formal "golden visa." The Investment Resident Visa requires a minimum capital investment of approximately USD 200,000 in an active Taiwanese business, investment fund, or qualifying economic activity. Holders must reside in Taiwan for at least 183 days per year to maintain the permit. Dependents may obtain derivative residency. A higher-tier program, the Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC), informally called the "Plum Blossom Card," grants immediate permanent residency for substantial investors committing approximately USD 480,000 or more, without an annual residence-day requirement. Applications are processed by the National Immigration Agency, typically within 8 working days for domestic applicants.

Acceso para inversores extranjeros

Foreign investors (FINIs — Foreign Institutional Investors, and FIDIs — Foreign Individual Investors) may generally invest in TWSE-listed equities without an aggregate foreign ownership ceiling, except in certain restricted sectors such as telecommunications, broadcasting, agriculture, and transportation. Foreigners must first register with the TWSE to obtain an Investor ID (a process that typically takes under 10 minutes online), then open a trading account with a local securities firm and a designated agent bank for settlement. There is no cap on overall foreign portfolio investment in most listed companies, but acquiring 10% or more of issued shares in a single transaction triggers additional regulatory review. Foreign residents living in Taiwan may open local brokerage accounts directly upon obtaining residency status; they must also hold a local bank account (in TWD) for settlement.
