Economy & industry overview

Ghana is a lower-middle-income economy in West Africa whose growth is underpinned by gold and cocoa exports, oil production, and a growing services sector. The country underwent a sovereign debt restructuring in 2023 under an IMF Extended Credit Facility programme following a severe fiscal and currency crisis triggered by post-pandemic shocks and Russia-Ukraine commodity price pressures. Real GDP growth rebounded to an estimated 5.7% in 2024, driven by services (particularly ICT and finance), mining, and construction. Key export commodities include gold, cocoa, crude oil, and timber, while the services sector—especially telecoms, finance, and trade—accounts for the largest share of GDP. Ghana's Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) emerged as the top-performing stock market in Africa in 2024, recording an annual composite index return of 56.2%.

Local broker access

Direct investment in Ghana Stock Exchange-listed securities requires opening an account with a GSE-licensed dealing member (stockbroker) and registering with the Central Securities Depository (CSD). Foreign investors may trade GSE securities without prior exchange control permission, though some restrictions on portfolio investors not resident in Ghana apply. There are no exchange control restrictions on the remittance of dividends, capital gains, or original investment. International investors typically access the GSE through local licensed brokers such as Databank Brokerage, CDH Securities, IC Securities, or FirstBanC Financial Services. No single-country Ghana ETF is currently traded on major US exchanges; exposure is available through broad frontier/Africa regional ETFs.

Relocation & residency

Investment visa / residency programme

Grants No formal investment-migration programme

Ghana does not operate a formal investment-migration or golden visa programme granting residency or citizenship in exchange for capital investment. Ghana does offer a Right of Abode certificate to persons of African descent in the diaspora under the Ghana Immigration Service, allowing indefinite stay, but this is not structured as an investment-migration scheme and does not require a minimum capital threshold. No programme equivalent to a standard golden visa exists as of 2024-2025.

Foreign-investor access

Foreign nationals may reside in Ghana under standard visa and residence permit categories administered by the Ghana Immigration Service. A Residence Permit may be obtained by persons with employment, investment, or family ties. The Right of Abode certificate is available to persons of African descent who wish to reside in Ghana indefinitely; it is not contingent on a capital investment threshold. Investors may obtain a Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) registration, which facilitates business operations, but does not itself confer residency rights. The country has no formal citizenship-by-investment programme.
