Visão geral da economia e do setor

Colombia is the fourth-largest economy in Latin America with a nominal GDP of approximately $457 billion in 2025, driven by oil and gas exports, financial services, agriculture, and manufacturing. Ecopetrol, the state-controlled national oil company, remains the largest listed company and a central pillar of government revenues. The financial sector is well-developed relative to regional peers, led by Grupo Cibest (formerly Bancolombia), Grupo Aval, and Banco de Bogotá. The country's infrastructure and utilities sector is anchored by ISA (Interconexión Eléctrica), a major regional electricity transmission operator majority-owned by Ecopetrol. GDP growth moderated to around 2.7% in 2025 while headline inflation remained above the central bank's 3% target, prompting gradual monetary policy easing by Banco de la República.

Acesso por corretoras locais

Interactive Brokers does not offer direct access to the BVC for retail clients; Colombian equities with US ADRs (EC, CIB, AVAL) can be traded through IBKR on NYSE/OTC. Saxo Bank similarly does not provide direct BVC equity trading. For direct BVC access, foreigners typically open accounts with licensed Colombian brokers (sociedades comisionistas de bolsa) such as Valores Bancolombia, BTG Pactual Colombia, Acciones y Valores, or Credicorp Capital Colombia. Account opening requires passport identification, proof of address, source-of-funds documentation, and registration of the investment with Banco de la República. Some Latin American regional platforms (e.g., Protección, InveReady) also facilitate BVC access. US and European residents seeking Colombian exposure without a local account most commonly use the COLO ETF or ADRs traded in New York.

Concessões Temporary residency (renewable; path to permanent residency)

Colombia offers a Resident Investor Visa (M-10 for real estate and M-6 for business investment) that grants temporary residency and can lead to permanent residency after five consecutive years. As of 2026, the real estate investment threshold is set at 350 times the monthly minimum wage (SMMLV), equivalent to approximately USD 153,000–160,000 depending on the exchange rate. The business investment visa (M-6) requires a lower threshold of around 100 SMMLV, equivalent to approximately USD 35,000–38,000. Colombia does not offer a direct citizenship-by-investment program; naturalization requires meeting residency requirements. The prior pathway to instant permanent residency for real estate investors was eliminated by Resolution 5477. Foreign investors holding the M-10 visa must maintain that status for five years before applying for the Resident (R) Visa.

Acesso para investidores estrangeiros

Colombia generally imposes no blanket foreign ownership limits on BVC-listed stocks; foreigners may acquire shares in listed companies without special approvals merely on account of being foreign. Exceptions apply in specific sectors: foreign shareholders of Colombian broadcast radio or television entities cannot exceed 40% of share capital. Investments in the financial, hydrocarbon, and mining sectors are subject to special registration regimes and concession agreements but are not capped in amount. All direct and portfolio foreign investments must be registered with Banco de la República (the central bank). Foreign investors must transact through a local administrator — typically a Financial Superintendence-authorized brokerage firm (sociedad comisionista de bolsa) or trust company. Non-residents can open brokerage accounts with BVC member firms by complying with standard KYC/AML requirements, and are subject to Colombian withholding tax on dividends and capital gains.
