Tunisia is a lower-middle-income economy in North Africa with a population of approximately 12 million, strategically located along the Mediterranean coast between Algeria and Libya. Key economic sectors include financial services, tourism, phosphate and energy extraction, agri-food processing, mechanical and electrical component manufacturing, and textiles. Real GDP growth moderated to 1.6% in 2024 following stagnation in 2023, constrained by drought, subdued external demand, and public financing pressures. The Tunis Stock Exchange (BVMT) is classified as a Frontier Market by both MSCI and FTSE Russell, with a domestic equity market capitalization of approximately $8.3 billion as of end-2024. Inflation has declined from a peak above 10% in early 2023 to around 7% on average in 2024, aided by tighter monetary policy and easing global commodity prices.

Direct retail access to the Tunis Stock Exchange (BVMT) for non-resident foreign investors is subject to Tunisian exchange control regulations administered by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT). Foreign investors may hold listed equities through a 'compte en dinars convertibles' (convertible dinar account) opened at an authorised intermediary in Tunisia. A handful of licensed stockbrokers (intermédiaires en Bourse) operate under CMF supervision; notable ones include Attijari Intermédiation, BIAT Capital, Amen Invest, and MAC SA. International retail brokers generally do not provide direct BVMT access; exposure is more commonly obtained via frontier-market ETFs. Settlement is T+3.

Foreign nationals can obtain a residency card (carte de séjour) valid for one year and renewable, typically linked to employment contracts, registered business activity, or property ownership. The Official language is Arabic; French is widely used in business and administration. Cost of living is relatively low by regional standards. Healthcare access in Tunis is adequate; international schools are available in the capital. Currency controls restrict the repatriation of capital by non-residents, which is a material consideration for foreign investors and expatriates.
