Wirtschafts- und Branchenüberblick

Malaysia is an upper-middle-income economy with a nominal GDP of approximately USD 437 billion in 2025, driven by manufacturing, commodities, financial services, and a growing technology sector. The economy expanded at roughly 4.9–5.2% in real terms in 2025, supported by strong domestic demand, robust export performance, and a global semiconductor upcycle that benefited Malaysia's established electronics and electrical manufacturing base. Key industries include palm oil, petroleum and natural gas (anchored by state-owned Petronas), Islamic finance, tourism, and semiconductor packaging and testing, with the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone emerging as a major draw for data-center and high-tech investment. The Bursa Malaysia (KLSE) had a total domestic market capitalization of approximately USD 449 billion at end-2024, rising to over USD 2 trillion Malaysian ringgit (roughly USD 450 billion) during 2025. Malaysia's financial system is well-developed by regional standards, with a large Islamic banking sector and an active capital market supervised by the Securities Commission Malaysia.

Lokaler Brokerzugang

Interactive Brokers added direct access to Bursa Malaysia-listed equities and ETFs for its global client base; MYR-denominated trades benefit from automatic FX conversion within the IBKR platform. Saxo Bank offers Bursa Malaysia access through its global platform. Local Malaysian brokers such as Maybank Investment Bank, CIMB Securities, RHB Investment Bank, and Kenanga offer online trading accounts; foreigners can open accounts but typically need a Malaysian bank account and must complete a CDS account application. For clients without a Malaysian bank account, nominee brokerage arrangements through international brokers (IBKR, Saxo) are the most practical access route. Bursa Malaysia operates under Securities Commission Malaysia oversight and follows T+2 settlement.

Malaysia's primary long-term residency program for foreigners is the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, administered by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The programme was revamped in 2023 into three tiers: Silver (5-year renewable, minimum fixed deposit of approximately USD 150,000 plus property purchase of at least MYR 600,000), Gold (15-year renewable, approximately USD 500,000 deposit plus MYR 1,000,000 property), and Platinum (20-year renewable, approximately USD 1,000,000 deposit plus MYR 2,000,000 property). A Special Economic Zone pathway exists with lower thresholds (approximately USD 32,000–65,000 depending on age). All tiers require a minimum stay of 90 cumulative days per year, a Malaysian medical check-up, and valid Malaysian medical insurance. MM2H is a residency visa, not a pathway to citizenship.

Zugang für ausländische Investoren

Foreign nationals can generally invest in Bursa Malaysia-listed stocks without restriction on most equities. To trade directly on Bursa Malaysia, a foreigner must open a Central Depository System (CDS) account (Malaysia's share registry) through a licensed broker and is typically required to hold a Malaysian bank account. Certain sectors carry foreign ownership caps: banking (generally up to 70% foreign equity), insurance (70%), and some government-linked industries may have bumiputera equity requirements. There are no exchange-control restrictions on repatriating investment proceeds for portfolio investments, though Bank Negara Malaysia monitoring applies to large capital flows. Foreigners may alternatively access Malaysian equities through nominee accounts offered by international brokers without needing a local bank account.
