Visão geral da economia e do setor

Kenya is East Africa's largest economy and a regional hub for finance, technology, and trade, with a nominal GDP of approximately USD 136 billion in 2025. The economy is anchored by a services sector that accounts for over half of GDP, driven by telecommunications, mobile money innovation, banking, and a growing tech ecosystem centred on Nairobi. Agriculture—particularly tea, coffee, and horticulture—remains a critical export earner and employer, while tourism, geothermal energy, and logistics add further diversification. The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is one of Africa's oldest exchanges, with Safaricom alone representing roughly 35–40% of total equity market capitalisation. Kenya carries elevated public debt (debt-to-GDP around 68% as of mid-2025) but has maintained positive growth and improving macroeconomic stability.

Acesso por corretoras locais

No US broker offers direct NSE access. Foreign investors typically access the NSE via local Kenyan brokers (e.g., Dyer & Blair, Kestrel Capital, Standard Investment Bank) who accept non-resident clients and facilitate CDSC account opening. Some global brokers and frontier-specialist platforms may provide intermediated access. The VanEck AFK ETF is the most practical US-listed vehicle for Kenyan equity exposure after the closure of the iShares FM ETF in January 2025.

Concessões Temporary residency (renewable), path to permanent residency

Kenya offers a Class G Investor Permit for foreign investors who invest a minimum of USD 100,000 in a registered Kenyan business. The permit is renewable every two years and allows the holder and dependents to live and work in Kenya. After continuous legal residence, investors may apply for permanent residency; the pathway to citizenship requires a minimum 7-year residence period and satisfaction of other conditions under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act. There is no formal citizenship-by-investment programme comparable to European golden visa schemes.

Acesso para investidores estrangeiros

Foreign investors may freely purchase shares on the NSE through a licensed stockbroker after opening a Central Depository and Settlement Corporation (CDSC) account. There is no restriction on the amount held by a single foreign investor, but a 25% floor of each company's issued share capital is reserved for Kenyan citizens. Capital gains tax on listed securities was reintroduced from 2023 at 15% of net gain; non-resident withholding tax on dividends is 15% (reduced under applicable tax treaties). Foreign land ownership in Kenya is prohibited; non-citizens may hold land on leasehold terms up to 99 years.
